Summary

"This is as important a book on space as has ever been written and it's a riveting page-turner, too。" —Homer Hickam, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of Rocket Boys

The dramatic inside story of the historic flights that launched SpaceX—and Elon Musk—from a shaky startup into the world's leading-edge rocket company。

SpaceX has enjoyed a miraculous decade。 Less than 20 years after its founding, it boasts the largest constellation of commercial satellites in orbit, has pioneered reusable rockets, and in 2020 became the first private company to launch human beings into orbit。 Half a century after the space race it is private companies, led by SpaceX, standing alongside NASA pushing forward into the cosmos, and laying the foundation for our exploration of other worlds。

But before it became one of the most powerful players in the aerospace industry, SpaceX was a fledgling startup, scrambling to develop a single workable rocket before the money ran dry。 The engineering challenge was immense; numerous other private companies had failed similar attempts。 And even if SpaceX succeeded, they would then have to compete for government contracts with titans such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing, who had tens of thousands of employees and tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue。 SpaceX had fewer than 200 employees and the relative pittance of $100 million in the bank。

In Liftoff, Eric Berger, senior space editor at Ars Technica, takes readers inside the wild early days that made SpaceX。 Focusing on the company’s first four launches of the Falcon 1 rocket, he charts the bumpy journey from scrappy underdog to aerospace pioneer。 We travel from company headquarters in El Segundo, to the isolated Texas ranchland where they performed engine tests, to Kwajalein, the tiny atoll in the Pacific where SpaceX launched the Falcon 1。 Berger has reported on SpaceX for more than a decade, enjoying unparalleled journalistic access to the company’s inner workings。 Liftoff is the culmination of these efforts, drawing upon exclusive interviews with dozens of former and current engineers, designers, mechanics, and executives, including Elon Musk。 The enigmatic Musk, who founded the company with the dream of one day settling Mars, is the fuel that propels the book, with his daring vision for the future of space。

Filled with never-before-told stories of SpaceX’s turbulent beginning, Liftoff is a saga of cosmic proportions。

The long and winding road that brought SpaceX from being Elon Musk's crazy dream to becoming the most influential space company in the World it is now。Even though Eric Berger describes everything in minute detail and has obviously interviewed a lot of people, it never gets boring or long-winded。 For those who are truly interested, like me, this book can even be described as "an easy read"。Like a lot of people, I've been following SpaceX ever since it began, but much of what is described in this The long and winding road that brought SpaceX from being Elon Musk's crazy dream to becoming the most influential space company in the World it is now。Even though Eric Berger describes everything in minute detail and has obviously interviewed a lot of people, it never gets boring or long-winded。 For those who are truly interested, like me, this book can even be described as "an easy read"。Like a lot of people, I've been following SpaceX ever since it began, but much of what is described in this book I never realized (or even knew)。 This puts a lot of things into a much clearer perspective and adds to the respect I already had for the great achievements of all the people at SpaceX past and present。A great book for the SpaceX fan-community, but also for those who just want to understand what the fuss is all about。 。。。more

3 1/2 - I liked it, but I wish it was more like a story rather than a timeline in book form。

I had only ever known of the early years of SpaceX and Falcon1 in passing。 This sheds tremendous light on the early years, challenges and the sheer will of everyone involved working through poor luck and working with extensive dedication。 With Starlink live and Starship making leaps of progress this was an exciting and timely read。

We will undoubtedly be seeing a deluge of books about Elon Musk over the coming years, but this isn't one of them。 Instead, it focuses on the team of engineers that worked on SpaceX's initial skunkworks project to launch satellites into orbit。Musk is their leader, both Chief Technology Officer and Chief Financial Officer, but isn't given an outsized role in this book。 The engineers, none of whom I'd heard of, are the ensemble team at the heart of the story。 Although I knew the eventual outcome, We will undoubtedly be seeing a deluge of books about Elon Musk over the coming years, but this isn't one of them。 Instead, it focuses on the team of engineers that worked on SpaceX's initial skunkworks project to launch satellites into orbit。Musk is their leader, both Chief Technology Officer and Chief Financial Officer, but isn't given an outsized role in this book。 The engineers, none of whom I'd heard of, are the ensemble team at the heart of the story。 Although I knew the eventual outcome, I found myself tense about how things would end up, similar to when I watched film Apollo 13。 So, it's one of those rare non-fiction books that becomes a page-turner, as you race to find out its conclusion。I was surprised to learn, in the epilogue, that Musk was not only supportive of the book, but directed the author to interview the engineering team and make them the focus of the book。 Musk is generally considered a megalomaniac, and American engineering talent as in decline, but this book changed my thinking on both counts。 。。。more

It felt like reading a thriller。 Gave me immense joy and I felt like I am in their island testing and launching。 What a ride! Brilliant writing by Eric。 Totally recommend this book。

This book is not about Elon Musk。 Rather, it’s about the team that built Space X - their travails, their commitment, their dogged devotion to the end goal。 Every good team requires a good captain and while the captain of the Space X team is undoubtedly Elon Musk, he wouldn’t have been as good if it wasn’t for a great team that he put together。 This book is all about them。 A must read this summer!

Captivating story and inspirational company! Engineers make dreams come true。

Good book and I liked the fact that this book focused on the early days of SpaceX, along with all the key staff that made it happen。 While Musk's name is in the title and clearly a main figure throughout the early days, this is not a Musk-centric book。It's no wonder why SpaceX is having such tremendous success today。 They hired brilliant people and completely upset the aerospace industry。 Thank God for the innovation and hard work these people put in years ago。 The US has new ways of getting sat Good book and I liked the fact that this book focused on the early days of SpaceX, along with all the key staff that made it happen。 While Musk's name is in the title and clearly a main figure throughout the early days, this is not a Musk-centric book。It's no wonder why SpaceX is having such tremendous success today。 They hired brilliant people and completely upset the aerospace industry。 Thank God for the innovation and hard work these people put in years ago。 The US has new ways of getting satellites, supplies and people safely into orbit。Great book and I recommend this to anyone interested in rockets and space。 。。。more

A really fun, page turning read on the earliest days of SpaceX。 I’ve read Eric Berger, the author, since his days as the science blogger at the Houston Chronicle。 It was really cool to see him get the chance to turn his coverage of SpcaeX into this history with access to so many key players。 Recommended。

A must read for anyone interested in business。 This book is amazing for this day and age。 Getting wowed by what SpaceX is amazing。 It is just too easy to think that amazing things just happen。 This book shows the inside hard work, tough decisions and extreme team devotion that it takes to succeed。 As they say; it takes 20 years to make an overnight success。 If you keep up with SpaceX in the news, you should read this book。

I was really eager to read the book as soon as possible。 I am certainly not dismayed, because the book sheds light on the key beginning years and dramas of SpaceX。 Sometimes it was just too narrow and it jumps back and forth in the plot and the chapter dividing isn't perfect。 But! My husband has long been a SpaceX fan。 He often stays up late or wakes up early to watch their launches。 I've seen a few, but now I appreciate them much more。 Wow。 Amazing story about persistence, passion, learning from failures, and hard work。 My husband has long been a SpaceX fan。 He often stays up late or wakes up early to watch their launches。 I've seen a few, but now I appreciate them much more。 Wow。 Amazing story about persistence, passion, learning from failures, and hard work。 。。。more

An insightful and interesting story around SpaceX founding and early struggles。 Elon is truly a unique individual and this book quite well illustrates some of his characteristic traits。 Both, the good and no so good ones。

A fascinating look at Elon Musk and his private company Spacex。 We follow his quest to build cheaper better space rockets than NASA or any other small rocket companies。 He has ambitious plans to set up human colonies one day on Mars。 But for now he is perfecting his craft on smaller missions。 If you love space rockets and have been following Spacex launches you will love this book。 I listened to the audio version。 Very well read。

SpaceX is the ultimate combination of genius, audacity, scrappiness, and remarkable ambition。 Such an inspiring story, where the company’s survival came down to the wire in their preparations for their 4th attempt at a launch。

Self-belief & skin in the game are fundamental for innovation。 This is a brilliant story (as expected) for which I would rate it 5/5, it's just that the writing style is bit dry (3/5)。 SpaceX is going to be very significant in coming decades with complete monopoly over Space tech but this book shows what they'd to go through to actually achieve something to the scale they've innovated today。 They literally failed almost 4 times to reach actually reach the 'orbit' and the technically challenges w Self-belief & skin in the game are fundamental for innovation。 This is a brilliant story (as expected) for which I would rate it 5/5, it's just that the writing style is bit dry (3/5)。 SpaceX is going to be very significant in coming decades with complete monopoly over Space tech but this book shows what they'd to go through to actually achieve something to the scale they've innovated today。 They literally failed almost 4 times to reach actually reach the 'orbit' and the technically challenges were huge; on top of logistical & regulatory challenges they faced。 It's really a fiction like story of how they've moved at abnormal speeds, I guess that's the sheer genius of Musk。 Massive massive respect for SpaceX & whole crew! 。。。more

It is the best book ever on space x and possibly the best business book too it talks about many details you can learn to apply to your life。

Thrilling stories about the Flight Four。 However it seem to lack some details, I wished someone would recorded the speeches and conversations between SpaceX team members at that time。

Kristine Strautane

I had chills reading this book。 So emotional and inspiring to read about the personalities behind the scene of SpaceX and what they had to endure on the way to success。

After reading you have the impression you have been part of the early days at SpaceX

I was expecting a breathless hagiography and that's pretty much what I got。 Very similar in style and concept to The Soul of a New Machine。 The workmanlike writing attempts to create lore around the people and minor events that attended the monumentally inspiring achievements of SpaceX。 Though the people it describes did incredible things, their backgrounds and daily hard work are not all that interesting。 Perhaps I would prefer a biography of just Musk。 I was expecting a breathless hagiography and that's pretty much what I got。 Very similar in style and concept to The Soul of a New Machine。 The workmanlike writing attempts to create lore around the people and minor events that attended the monumentally inspiring achievements of SpaceX。 Though the people it describes did incredible things, their backgrounds and daily hard work are not all that interesting。 Perhaps I would prefer a biography of just Musk。 。。。more

Its hard not to come across as a ‘fanboy’ of Elon Musk, but I must admit that I see him as one of the few visionaries alive in our time。 Having the audacity to lead a team towards conquering Mars and later the galaxy while most people are just busy telling him and his team it can’t be done。 Excellent and thrilling page turner。

Extremely interesting。 This focuses mostly on SpaceX up until 2008+ and then races toward present day in the last pages。 Not an Elon Musk bio by any means, it centers on the team he built and their time, mostly on Omelek/Kwaj, and how they built and tested their rockets。 Fascinating。
